In memory of Robert
There was once a boy I knew when I was about nine
He was friend of my brother’s, not a friend of mine
In fact I did not like him very much, he used to be so rough
He was only seven years old, but he acted very tough
Little did I know, little did I know
He stepped on the coach that day and such a smile he gave me
I was surprised for he was sewing little crosses on a patch
Look what I’ve made he said
And his eyes shone at me for the first time
I smiled and I said that’s fine
But little did I know, little did I know
That his eyes shone at me for the last time
He stepped off the coach that day and his coat caught in the door
His brother ran beside and he shouted and he cried
And all the children saw
The driver did not stop for the driver did not see
And the boy went under the wheels
And everybody knew yes everybody knew
They knew and wished it wasn’t real
And little did I know, oh, little did I know
That when I ran from the coach to my front door
He was smiling and his eyes were shining for the last time
For the very last time
But in me for ever more
